History of Miami Beach - Miami Beach Revival
The city of Miami Beach was incorporated in 1915 and the city grew as a major tourist destination. It started off attracting snows birds and international travelers in the history of Miami Beach. Miami Beach’s popularity grew year after year, attracting an increasing number of vacationers. Miami Beach was originally created by rich industrialists from up north with the intention to act as a playground from the rich and famous. Carl Fisher attracted rich clientele to spend their holidays in Miami Beach for a few months out of the year.
Miami Beach became less elitist in the 50s and 60s which lured vacationers wishing to travel on inexpensive holidays in Miami Beach and stay in one of the numerous Miami Beach hotels. Miami Beach still attracted celebrities such as Franck Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Sammy Davis Junior, etc. Politicians such as the Kennedys and Winston Churchill also spent their vacations in Miami Beach. During the beginning of 70s, the advent of cheap flights to new Caribbean destinations precipitated the fall of Miami Beach as a tourist destination.
The 80s were even worse. At this point in the history of Miami Beach, tourism dropped to a new low and became a war zone between the Columbian and Cuban drug groups and cartel that dominated the city. Tourism was almost eradicated. Miami Beach became the murder capital of the United States. This was the golden age of drug dealing in the history of Miami Beach. By 1984 Miami Vice premiered on TV and became an international sensation. For the following 4 years, Miami Beach started to emerge from the doldrums and initiate the Miami Beach revival. Miami Vice was instrumental in the Miami Beach revival as a major tourist destination. Bruce Weber, a famous photographer, also helped the Miami Beach revival tremendously by “glamorizing” Miami Beach through the use of images. The fashion industry started to discover Miami Beach as major centre for modeling and shooting.
Stars and celebrities of the time participated in this revitalization. Lauren Hutton, Paloma Picasso, Daryl Hannah and John F Kennedy Jr. flocked to Miami Beach on a regular basis to party, relax and unwind. The Miami Beach revival was complete in the Mid 90’s and the city was home to full time celebrity residents including Madonna, Sylvester Stallone and Rosie O’Donnell. From the Mid 90’s forward, the success of the Miami Beach revival as a hip and trendy destination just keeps increasing.
